Even before the term "metrosexual" became part of the pop culture vocabulary, men's skin care products were an essential part of the post-shaving ritual. However, many men are still hesitant to protect and treat their skin like women do for fear of ridicule.
In general, men have thicker skin than women, so they wrinkle later in life, but they are 15 percent more likely to have oily skin and generally have larger pores than women their age. So, although they wrinkle later, their skin accumulates dirt and oil for longer, and this can be just as problematic.
To avoid nasty blackheads and breakouts, men should wash their faces twice a day – in the morning after shaving and at night before bed – to keep dirt and oil from accumulating. A mild soap and water may be sufficient, but one of the many specially formulated face washes for men will likely do a better job. These are available at most drug stores or supermarkets and are made specifically for certain skin types, such as oily, dry, combination or sensitive.
Men's face care is complicated by shaving, which can irritate the skin, leaving it red and bumpy. Shaving in the direction of the hair's grain and using a moisturizer-enriched shaving cream will reduce the burning and chaffing caused by the razor. Moisturizing after shaving is also essential. Rehydrating the skin will keep it healthy and will also feel good. Many aftershave lotions include a moisturizer, but separate moisturizers designed for men with especially dry or sensitive skin can also be found.
Men with oily or acne-prone skin may need a harsher cleanser containing salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or alcohol and acetone to remove excess oil and prevent breakouts. These ingredients are common in many over-the-counter acne-fighting facial cleansers. Higher concentrations or more aggressive compounds are available in prescription acne treatments, which are generally reserved for those with severe or painful breakouts.
Skin is the largest bodily organ and the one most exposed to the elements, so it is important to take proper care of it – for men and women alike. With the variety and wide availability of skin care products designed specifically for men, there's no excuse for guys not to have healthy, younger-looking skin.
