Skin Care for Anti-Aging

Skin Care for Anti-AgingHuman beings have attempted to fight off Mother Nature's effects for thousands of years in their quest for eternal youth. Skin care professionals have scrutinized the aging process, looking for ways to slow it down and keep the skin looking young and fresh.

Our skin starts to lose its elasticity when we are in our mid 20s. Anti-aging creams are one option for fighting this process. They attempt to tighten the fibers of the skin, making it firmer and giving it an extra boost of nutrients. Anti-aging skin creams can also help reverse the first signs of wrinkles by encouraging blood to circulate underneath the skin's surface.

Boot injections, chemical peels and face lifts are all extremely invasive anti-aging procedures. There are also many anti-aging medications and herbal remedies that claim to rejuvenate aged skin, such as DHEA, melatonin, lipoid acid, green tea extract and fish oil.

Perhaps the best way to fight the aging look of our skin is to protect it from the element that ages it fastest – the sun. Avoiding repeated or prolonged exposure to the sun will not only keep your skin looking younger but also protect it from actual sun damage.

Of course, the sun is part of our daily lives, whether we like it or not (and most of us do!), so unless we become hermits, we can't exactly avoid it.

You don't have to spend the rest of your life indoors to protect your skin (after all, what good is younger-looking skin if you can't show it off?), but you do have to take precautions to keep the sun's damaging rays at bay. Sunscreen should be an essential part of your skin care regimen, especially in summer but also in winter. Look for moisturizers or foundations with a sun protection factor (SPF) built into the formula. This will keep you protected without adding steps to your routine or more bottles to your makeup bag. However, be aware that this SPF is often low – generally no more than 15 – so you will need to apply additional sunscreen if you'll be spending a lot of time in the sun.
