Vitiligo

Vitiligo, pronounced "vit-ill-eye-go", is a skin disorder that appears in milky white patches on the skin's surface. Vitiligo, or leukoderma, results when the body attacks its own immune system. The body attacks skin cells called melanocytes that are responsible for producing skin pigment. Vitiligo mainly appears on sun exposed areas like the hands, face, lips, necks, eyes and nostrils. However, vitiligo can also develop in the armpits or on the groin, nipples and genitalia. There are symptoms of this type of skin disorder.

My son was recently diagnosed with Vitiligo and was told there wasn't much we could do. I researched and came to the conclusion that there is some type of allergy related and had him tested for food allergies and low and behold he's allergic to the spice tumeric as well as wheat and gluten. I would urge everyone affected by Vitiligo to get tested for food allergies.

I was diagnosed with having vitligo in 2001, after the birth of my third child. It can be stress-related. I had visited numerous dermatologists only to be given topical steroids and not so hopeful advice. The disease never made sense to me, I always had a feeling that there had to be a way to "fix" my immune system. I started taking large doses of prescription vitamins, particularly B's, Folic Acid and C. The spreading seemed to slow down, but not by much. I continued to do research until by accident my husband saw a news program about another auto immune disease: celiac. If you are allergic to gluten, the villi in your small intestine are damaged and do not permit any vitamins, particularly B's to get into your system!! I was diagnosed with celiac disease 2 months ago and have been living gluten free ever since. THe other result: MY SKIN HAS SLOWLY BEGUN TO REPIGMENT!! Do not give up hope. I truly believe we all have some allergies, and we need to diagnose ourselves!!

I have had vitiligo for 25 years and suddenly my arms are re-pigmenting...I even have some freckling. I have celiac disease and have been adhering to the gluten free diet for 5 years (since diagnosis). Could there be a connection? Sincerely, Lorraine Lunz.....E-mail...allunz@verizon.net

I know of a fabulous dermatologist at Mt Sinai Hospital in NYC (98th Street b/w 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue). His name is Dr. Suhail Hadi, and he has been treating me for several weeks now, with miraculous results (through the use of an eximer laser). I travel to him from Boston.

I'm 20 years old and have had Vitiligo since I was 14. Only recently, the past two or three years to be exact, have I noticed the most patches come out. I live in New Jersey and am interested in any type of effective treatment. Does anyone know of any good dermatologists on the east coast and how I could get in contact with them?
