Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a perpetual skin disorder that affects at least 6 million people in the United States. This skin inflammation and scaling is driven by the immune system, which contains a T-cell, a type of white blood cell. When psoriasis occurs, T-cells mistakenly stop protecting the body against virus and illness and become too active to work properly. The over-activate T-cells also cause the rapid turnover of skin cells, which results in severe skin inflammation.

Typical symptoms of psoriasis are skin thickness, redness, a sore and / or itchy sensation, and the appearance of silvery scales. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, consult a physician before the symptoms become too severe.

There is a new treatment that just came out, not sure if its available in the US yet but they have it in Europe. Its totally herbal and has no side effects (like most of the other meds) and best of all its just a pill so you don't have to wear creams which ruin your clothes! You can read about it here www.tinefcon.com, I called them they said it would be available everywhere soon but can email them and they will tell you how/where to get it. emma

To alll people with psoriasis, especially the guttate kind: NOW HEAR THIS. get your tonsils out!!!! Most people who start having psoriasis have the guttate kind first--so if you don't have your tonsils and adenoids, you won't get strep anymore (or at least rarely) and therefore you may well end up having no more psoriasis either of any kind. I guarantee you it will help enormously, if you don't have insurance to pay for it sighn up for Medicaid/Medicare or see if there is a Community Action clinic in your town--they charge on a sliding scale according to income but anybody can go there. Do NOT let money keep you from getting treatment for this disease, certain forms of it can be life threatening. As to shampoos, they still make Tegrin shampoo, it should be in the shampoo aisle next to all the other dandruff type shampoos; certain of the drugstore chains and also Wal-Mart may have a house brand of it which will be cheaper. Also, there is an OTC lotion called Baker's P & S which is specifically for psoriasis and seborrhea, you put it on all over your scalp at night, put on a shower cap or other head covering to protect your pillowcase, then shampoo it out in the morning. This will remove the scaling. There is a solution this problem, don't do yourselves in people--no problems we have is worth that. Keep the faith longhornusa

I've had scalp psoriasis since grade 2. I'm now in 8th grade. Im sick of it. But girls heres tip if you have scalp psoriasis. I could always get it cleared for 1 day using elecolm cream (wrong spelling) [prn. ellle-a-comb] but it would return, one day my mom thought of it. Get it cleared up for one day, and never EVER wear your hair up, wet or dry, it helps it get circultaion. I cut my hair shoulder length and thinned it to help it out. I also use a tar based shampoo every 2 days, it has kept it clear for almost 1 year to date!!! :) any suggestions on othre methods?

i just turned 15 and i've had psoriasis since i was 6/7. i have it on my: knees, below knees, elbows, lower arm, behind the ears and ankles. i can never wear shorts any more, and at first i did because i didn't care what people thought about it, but it got too annoying with everyone questioning you about it. "whats that? what happened? did you fall down? when did that happen? are you sick? is it contagious? is that mold growing on you? and my favorite...: are u turning into a fish?" and it wasn't even little kids who would ask these questions. atfirst i just told them its a skin disorder or whatever, but then it got really annoying having to deal with everyone, so now i just wear pants. and i just wish they could have sometype of cream that will actually work and is inexpensive....cause i've tried A LOT of creams.

Hi I have had psoriasis for many years and I understand the pain. I also have it in my nails and have had 3 steriod shots in every nail. It helped for about 2 months then nothing. I was taking the Embrel shots 2x's a week for 14 months. It hellped it some but I had to stop cause it can harm your liver. Tanning helps, but it is costly. So here I sit upset that I am out of things to do. I was looking into home things you can do, anyone have an idea? Kathkenn44@yahoo.com

HI chelsea, Im sorry this is so tough on you. Ive had psoriais for over 20 years. Right now I have guttate psoriasis and some plaque psoriasis. I am in my forties but I had it when I was young. I can only imagine how hard this is on a teenaged girl. There are treatments that are getting better every year. I am confident that someone will figure out a way to end this. Dont take any risky meds your young and your health is most important. Keep seeing your dermatologist and trying treatments till you find the right one. Meanwhile stay strong it will get better.

Hi! guys, I had severe psoriasis myself for at least 20 years and I tried all the topical solution, ointments and UV treatment. For me these cure helps my condition on and off. I got so frustrated and asked my family doctor if there's any injection solution he can give me to get rid of it. His now giving me every other two weeks an injection called Kenalog 40mg, 1ml in a small bottle ( Triamcinolone Suspension USP ) and this is not expensive. After 6 months, I'm amazed that this drug help me to clear my psoriasis, on my scalp, joints, legs, nails, back and some other parts of my body where I had them. For me this treatment works and hope to most of you too. I know how this condition put down your self- esteem and too embarrassing to be in public, I even cried just to looking at it and pity myself. Make sure to ask your doctor and discuss with him about this medication if this medication is good for you and if your body system can tolerate it. Talk to your doctor regarding the side effects of the drug and make sure you get educated and always ask your options. I hope this injection helps most of you and the best all of you and your skins gets better like mine. Let me know in 3 to 6 months or less if this start clearing your skin. Drop me a line, my e-mail is medina1963@rogers.com and hoping you write to me the good news. Good luck and God Bless us all.

The newest and best (sucessful) treatment is being given at Mt. Sinai in New York City. At present it is being given in the form of a clinical trial. Don't get discouraged, although it is extrmely hard to get into the study, nothing is impossible. You originally get a three month trial with the injections given twice a week. Two groups get the real medicine, while one group gets a placebo. After three months, all three groups get the medicine for free, for the next three years. This turns out to be close to $1, 000,000 worth of medicine for the three years. It removes close to eighty/ninety percent of the disease and it stays off for close to a year. Call the Dermatology Dept., clinical trials, at Mt. Sinai, and ask for Dr. Emma, the man in charge. Tell him you heard (from Roxanne Hull) how wonderful and great of a Doctor he is and you might get an in. Or at least on the waiting list. Good Luck.

I have psoriasis flares more frequent in the winter. This winter I am fine. Nine months ago my doctor advised me to rub the entire body with olive oil after each shower and I am doing it at least 3 times a week. Since I started this treatment I did not have any itching or rush. Once every two week I also used cormax topical solution for scalp. I feel very good so far. Olive oil was as a miracol for me. io

My 3 year old was diagnosed with psoriasis last october and it's been a nightmare ever since. the doctor's prescibed elidel and a steriod oinment but I'm afraid of them because they have cancer warnings on them. He's just 4 now and i have tried so many different lotions, vasaline and now I'm trying some concoction that a friend gave me. His hands are the worst part. They look like they belong on a 90 year old man. He is constantly scratching and asking me to scatch him all over. I feel so bad for him. I'd try anything to give him some relief. 2 weeks ago it started on his scalp. I'm struggling with making him comfortable in his own skin. i'm glad to know I'm not alone.

Hello. To Chelsey. I am 40 years old and I got this when I was 6. I know how you feel about the kids in school. I had a pretty hard time of it myself. In one school I went to the parent tried to have me removed. All I can tell you is keep your chin up. This is real devastaing when your real young but the one thing you must remember is you are just as good as anyone else. I don't use the perscription junk anymore. Just couldn't handle the side effects. I use to be covered with it from head to toe. Now I have it in only a few areas one of which I won't mention in public. I have used triple antibotic ointment on said area and it does help alot. I also use palmers olive butter lotion. Epson salt baths help. The sun is the best though. The one thing I can tell you is though I am not ashamed of what I have nor do I hide under layers of cloths. I have accepted what I have, doesn't mean I like it any better, but this is who I am. It doesn't stop me.

I have severe scalp psoriasis for the last 20 years, this is awful for me as i constantly itch. I also have it on my body(somewhat) but am afraid that it will get worse. I have tried everything even Enbrel which helped for about 18 months along with prednisone and methotrexate, every topical cream imaginable. I don't know where to turn. found this site doing some research. has anyone out there used cyclosporine? or soritane? these are two drugs I haven't tried. how about any side effects with these?? will be happy to hear from someone in the know. Could these drugs have worse side effects than everthing else I've been on??

I've had psoriasis for 16 years now, I'[m 43. Started out a small rash on my leg...used topical steriods and within a year it was spread to my elbows, knees, scalp, under my breast. For the last three years it's on my hands and feet and in/under my nails -- that's the most painful. I've tried every treatment, some work for a while, but most are pointless. Sunlight in the summer helps a lot. I put baby oil mixed with the liquid dovanex on my scalp 3-4 nights a week; it helps a lot. the baby oil loosens the plaques and relieves the itch. It's not a cure, I can't go a whole week without it or my scalp is covered again. I can't find any relief for my hands and nails. Vaseline works well on my elbows and knees; again, it just softens and loosens the plaques, but they come back.

I am 23 years old and have been dealing with severe plaque sporiasis since i was 19 along with type 1 juenile diabetes. Life seems to be really tough right now trying to decide which type of treatment to start with this winter. I think i will begin tanning and using my prescription creams. I got married in June of 2007 and i used Clobex lotion for my arms legs back side stomache and chest and Clobetisole solution for the scalp and elidel cream for my face groin and arm pits. All that worked wonders it took almost a year to clear up enough for comfort but i did wear my white dress with pride and my 2 piece bikini in jamaica. I did still have some light spots on my legs but the rest of me was pretty much clear. Now i havnt had any treatments since ( 1 1/2 years) so i am in pretty bad shape. It effects my relationship with my husband (he says he dont care about the spots but how could he not, YUCK!!!!!!!) and other people too. I work at a hospital and i have had people ask me if i was burned or worse yet if i had ring worm!! Talk about a chop to the self esteem. But anyway.... i really enjoy reading all the stories, sad, but i am glad to know that there are others out there that know how i feel. This disease is a life time fight to be slightly comfortable and more confifent. I hope to see a good treatment or even a cure someday. Best luck to you all and dont forget to ask god for help. Prayer is sometimes the best medicine.

Hi, my name is Chelsey. I am 13 yrs old and I am a victim of psoriasis. I was born with this dreadful disease. I itch all the time and it bleeds alot. I just want it to go away. You have no idea how bad I just want to be a normal pretty kid. The other girls in school walk around with nothing wrong with them and the guys look at them so sexy. Well now i want it to be my turn to be sexy. I can't even wear a bikini and be tan like them. Now I am stuck, so please if anyone reads this and knows of a treatment please comment very soon! Preferrably injections or pills that aren't cancerous but if not then that's ok I just want it to be gone.! PLEASE READ AND HELP ME!!!!!!

I just read all the comments and I just want to cry. I have had Psooriasis on my scalp for proably 15 years I am 44 now. None of the over the counter shampos change anything. I've tried advise from washing my hair everyday to only once a week, nothing works. I pick and pick and scratch till it my fingers are tired. My Psoriasis can sometimes itch alot or not at all, reguardless I still pick. JUst within the last 2 years I've begun to get red raised small blotches either on my arm near my elbow, on my chest or stomach, on and around my hips and waist occasionaly on my legs. Never larger than a quarter most about the size of a pea. some go away after a week or two some last for months. I've tried not using bath soap, only cool water and alwqys pileing on the lotion. Keeping my skin lotioned up helps some but is no cure for sure. I have lately noticed my hair thinning, I'm sure from all the picking. My hair dresser has always commented on how thick my hair is but now I can see my scalp. Some days I just want to cut it all off and shave my head bald. Thank you to everyone who has posted here and shared your pain. I think I am going to look into steering away from surgar and carbs and stop using bleach as well. I am very sad to hear about how young some of the psoriasis sufferers are. I bet our inviroment plays some part in this. I live on the west coast, spent my childhood in the ocean and live in a very populated area. Growing up I also had very sensitive skin. Does anyone have any common lifstyles?

If your looking for something that can help your Plaque Psoriasis, but you dont have much money to spend on products, Vasline Petroleum Jelly helps a lot with time. If you have Psoriasis on your hand and nails, like i do, it's good to always keep your nails cut and clean. I literally have tried 100's of products over the last 2 years, and the method that has worked the best for me, and i would recomend it to anyone with any kind of Psoriasis would be Mind Power. I know its hard living with psoriais, but try and keep yourself away from stress, smoke, unhealthy eating habits and STEROID OINMENTS. Good Luck to all of us and lets hang in there lol.

I have palmar-plantar psoriasis which causes severe bleeding cracks in my hands and bottom of my feet. The psoriasis the rest of you people describe is a piece of cake compared to this. I wish I had what you people have. I envy you. My psoriasis started overnight in April of 2008. I woke up and there it was. Welcome to hell. I am 51 years old and sometimes I would rather just die than to face this every day. I just got my first batch of Raptiva for injections at $1,800 dollars a month. For 24 weeks. I hope this helps. Plus my hips, knees, and ankles feel like they are on fire. I can hardly move. If the shots do not help, then I am not going to live like this. I can't. My first shot is Monday. I Hope....

I have had psoriasis on and off since my teenage years. Most of the time on my scalp in springs and falls but last couple of years it spread to my back and breast area. Last year when i moved from Europe to Asia things got out of control, patches over my scalp and body grew in sizes and started to itch and bleed. Later psoriasis even spread even to my legs and arms. I have tried different creams, shampoos and diets, and even meditation to calm myself down. Nothing seemed to help. I came across Champori herbal remedies for psoriasis in one of comments to the article about psoriasis in the newspaper website. I searched for it, and found only positive responses. I must admit, I was still very skeptical even when I was ordering that. My husband and I decided to go for the biggest spray and cream combo. We expected to get one of those ''big'' cream jars with double bottom that has very little of the cream itself (as with most internet-marketed creams) But Champori proved all my expectations wrong: no double bottoms, just opposite, the cream jar and the spray bottle had very thin walls and the cream was enough for whole 4 months even after applying all over my scalp and body. After I started using the cream, I noticed the difference in just three days. After a week the redness and itchiness were gone. In just two month the big patch just below my breast that was growing and spreading disappeared with no trace. Amazing stuff!! AA

I have also been suffering for close to 8 years with this seemingly pointless disease and have tried everything time allows...I am active in music, have a daughter, work full time so thing like tanning a few times a week dont really work well for me!...Anyway, i had been approved for the injection stuff but Im pretty sure I dont want to mess with my insides with man made chemicals....so onto the new venture, I will be trying psirasis-tabs and will post back in about 90 days to let everyone know how it went. Wish me luck......you never know when God smiracles have been presented !

Hello everyone. I am 21 years old. I've lived with psoriasis since i was young. It started off like any other rash. But this case, the rash was always itchy for relief. I kinda didn't think too bad about it until it spread and grew on both of my lower ankles and some times behind my knees. The doctor that previously treated me didn't not know of that rare skin disease. I was offered the generic 2% creme. I used it for 2 years but it gotten worst. I now have little areas on my right lower part of my leg and its embarrassing that I can no longer feel comfortable wearing shorts. I looked up possible remedies and will be trying the latest tab. I'm hoping that my body will react promptly and that i will be on the road to recovery. Diet is also a major factor in every individual case and I also learned that stress can really have its toll as well. I'll be back for an update.

Hi Everybody, I have been a psoriasis sufferer for the last 8 years. I have tried the dermatologist and the injections and the topical creams and all that Jazz! I have found one cream and soap that has helped me and actually helps heal the psoriasis batches. It is called MAZON cream and the soap is also called MAZON. The soap can be found at drug stores and WalMart. I order the cream in from WalMart. It is about $10 per jar and I put it on about 3 to four times a day. It is small enough you can carry it in your purse. It has helped me tremendously and I wanted to share it with all of you. If it helps then I am more than happy for you.If you catch the patch just as it starts it goes away in as little and a few days. I had some really bad patched that all of a sudden flared up on my lower legs and they were thick. It has been about 3 weeks now and they are almost gone. It truly is amazing. XOXO VAL

I suddenly developed scalp psoriasis after eating a couple of chocolate bars every evening for a couple of weeks. I understand that some people's system cannot digest excess amounts of sugar and/or daily consumption of carbohydrates i.e. bread. Until I get my system back under control, I am using aloe vera daily and it seems to be controlling the scaling and the itching. Hope this helps someone.

Okay I've spent thousands of dollars without lasting results. Everytime I wash my hair with expensive hair products, I find dried up scabs on my head. I did go to the "Hair Club" for a year and found the products helpful but did not continue with them because they were so expensive!!!! I am a white person (Italian) but sometimes I find the hair products made for people of color helpful. These products for hair re-growth help keep my head from being so dry. Has anyone tried that TV product,"Scalp-Med"--Maybe I don't have the name right. I think I will try them next.

my son is 17 and has guttate psoriasis. It would start to clear up with creams, but then return. I had him tested for strep. We did a blood test. Normal ASO levels in the blood should be between 0-100. Anything more indicates strep in the body. My son's level was 943. He is taking antibotics now in addition to topical tretatments. His back has cleared up,and we are hoping the rest of his body does as well. There is a good chance that it will go into remission if we can clear his body of strep.feel free to email me for more info/support HasmigK@aol.com

I have been wondering what the heck has been wrong with my scalp!! Some of what I am reading in your comments section sound just like what i'm going through except for the severe pain. My scalp needs to be washed every day, but being an african american female, that is just impossible. However, I do all I can to stop the flalking which occurs less than 5 days after shampooing. Nothing works!! I will finally see a dematologist in about 10 days. Whatever I find out, I will forward to you all. Brenda

I have severe psoriasis and a friend gave me a tube of creme called "Miracle Rash Repair plus" to stop the itching and of all the things I've tried, this one actually works. It is distributed by a company called Ontel Products Corp. in Fairfield, NJ. My friend got it at a store for products advertised on TV. Also I've found that Eucerine Calming Creme Daily Moisturizer helps with the dryness. I hope this helps you as they have helped me.

To everyone who has psorasis. If you go to your local health food store or any nutritional store at that there is a cream that some stores carry called Gardener's Dream Cream. It has helped me through A most extreme extensive experience of psorasis which was utterly painful and confidence wrecking at a young age of 20 years old. This cream will help heal the itchy, dryness, and slowly help to get rid of it. This along with tanning was what healed me and nothing else! Just a suggestion. Alot of people recomend it!
